How Often Should You Clean Your Dryer Vent in NJ?

Clean your dryer vent at least once a year. That’s the baseline from both the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). NFPA adds that you should clean it sooner if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry. Long vent runs, roof exits and heavy laundry use usually bring that “sooner” point forward.

Our New Jersey dryer vent cleaning service covers the full vent run, from the dryer to the outside hood, and includes an inspection.

Key facts

  • Baseline: once a year (NFPA, USFA).
  • Sooner: whenever drying takes longer than normal (NFPA).
  • Every load: clean the lint filter (NFPA, USFA).
  • Time: a professional cleaning usually takes about one hour.
  • Cost in NJ: $109.99 flat rate (REG. $169.99) as of October 14, 2026. See current coupons & prices.

Why is once a year the recommended schedule?

The lint filter doesn’t catch everything. Lint that gets past it is blown into the vent, where moisture from the dryer makes it stick to the duct walls, a little more with every load. NFPA names failure to clean as the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires, and USFA lists “failure to clean” as the leading factor (31%) in home dryer fire ignitions from 2018 to 2020.

When restricted airflow, lint and moisture make the dryer overheat, its temperature-limit safety switches cycle on and off and can eventually fail, while flammable lint keeps collecting next to the heat. A yearly cleaning removes that fuel before it becomes a blockage.

When should you clean it sooner than once a year?

Don’t wait for the yearly date if you notice any of these:

  • Long drying times. A normal load needs more than 35–45 minutes, or a second cycle.
  • Hot clothes. Clothing is hotter than normal at the end of the cycle.
  • A stuck flap. The vent hood flap outside doesn’t open while the dryer is running.
  • Moisture. There’s humidity or moisture in the laundry room.

How fast a vent clogs depends on use and on the vent itself: the more loads you run, the faster lint builds up. Long duct runs are where moisture condenses and creates restriction, so a long run to a side wall or the roof usually needs attention sooner than a short, straight run out the back wall. Runs with several turns and elbows also build up faster.

Does living in a New Jersey condo or townhouse change the schedule?

The recommendation doesn’t change: at least once a year. But attached homes often hit the “sooner” signs first. In many condos and townhouses, the dryer sits on an upper floor or in a closet, and the vent travels through a ceiling or wall before it exits on the side of the building or the roof. Those longer runs are exactly the kind that build up lint quickly.

If you live in an HOA community, check your association’s rules. Some associations set their own cleaning schedule and ask owners for a written record. Our HOA, townhouse and condominium service includes a written inspection and a certificate you can hand to the association.

Is cleaning the lint filter enough?

No. Clean the filter before or after every load (NFPA and USFA both recommend it), but it only catches part of the lint. The rest travels into the vent duct, where moisture makes it stick and pile up, so the full vent run still needs cleaning about once a year.

What can you do yourself between professional cleanings?

From the NFPA and USFA safety tips:

  • Clean the lint filter before or after every load, and never run the dryer without it.
  • Check the venting behind the dryer to make sure it isn’t damaged, crushed or restricted.
  • Go outside while the dryer runs and make sure the vent flap opens. In winter, keep it clear of snow.
  • Use rigid or flexible metal venting.
  • Keep boxes, clothes and cleaning supplies away from the dryer.
  • Turn the dryer off when you leave home or go to bed.

What does a professional dryer vent cleaning include?

At USA Air Management, the technician connects a high-pressure blower to the vent, then feeds a cable with a spinning brush through the run to push the lint out, from the dryer all the way to the outside hood. The whole process usually takes about one hour.

The technician also checks the vent against this list:

  1. The duct is at least 4 inches in diameter.
  2. Concealed ducts are rigid metal.
  3. Joints are secured with metal tape.
  4. Pipe connections point in the direction of the airflow.
  5. The vent is independent of all other systems and ends outdoors.
  6. The outside hood has a working back-draft damper.
  7. The connector between dryer and duct is flexible metal.
  8. A rodent and bird screen is fitted outside.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

At least once a year. The National Fire Protection Association and the U.S. Fire Administration both recommend cleaning the dryer vent annually, and NFPA says to clean it sooner if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry. Long runs, roof exits and heavy laundry use usually mean you will reach that point sooner.

How do I know my dryer vent needs cleaning before a year is up?

Watch for four signs: a normal load takes more than 35 to 45 minutes or needs a second cycle, clothes are hotter than normal at the end of the cycle, the outside vent flap does not open while the dryer runs, or there is moisture in the laundry room. Any of these means it is time to clean.

Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?

Yes. NFPA says the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them. A clogged vent traps lint and heat, the dryer overheats, and its temperature-limit safety switches cycle on and off and can eventually fail. Cleaning the full vent run removes the lint that would otherwise feed a fire.

How long does a professional dryer vent cleaning take?

Usually about one hour. The technician blows out the vent with a high-pressure blower, runs a spinning brush through the full duct to the outside hood, and checks the vent for problems such as crushed ducts, a missing damper or a vent that does not end outdoors. Long runs or roof exits can take longer.

Do condo and townhouse dryer vents need cleaning more often?

The recommended schedule is the same, at least once a year, but condo and townhouse vents often clog sooner because they tend to run farther, through ceilings or walls to the roof or a side wall. If your HOA requires proof, our HOA service includes a written inspection and a certificate for the association.
