What’s included in our dryer vent cleaning

Dryer vent cleaning removes the lint that builds up inside your dryer duct. The lint screen catches some of it, but most of the lint goes into the duct, and moisture from the dryer makes it stick to the walls. Over time that causes blockages, water in the line, and worst of all, no airflow. We fix the problems that come with it: clothes that won’t dry, a dryer that doesn’t get hot or overheats, bad connections, crushed hoses and breaks in the vent. Our goal is a dryer vent that’s clean, safe and up to code.

How a dryer vent cleaning visit works

  1. Check the run. The technician pulls the dryer out, looks at the transition hose behind it and finds where the vent leaves the house: side wall, back wall or roof.
  2. Measure the airflow first. We take an airflow meter reading at the outside vent before we touch anything, so you have a baseline to compare against.
  3. Clean the full line. Rotary brushes run through the whole vent, from the dryer connection to the exterior hood, including the elbows where lint packs in hardest.
  4. Clear the hood and the dryer cavity. The outside flap is cleared so it opens and closes freely, and loose lint around the drum housing is vacuumed out.
  5. Reconnect and retest. A crushed foil or vinyl hose is pointed out and can be swapped for a code-appropriate connector. We take a second airflow meter reading so you can compare it with the first.

A typical job takes about 45 minutes and up, depending on the length and layout of the vent run. Long runs, roof vents and stacked units in condos can take longer, but the price stays flat: we don't charge extra for a basement, closet or second-floor dryer.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

For most households, once a year is the right schedule. Clean it more often if you run the dryer every day, have a large family or pets, or have a vent longer than about 25 feet or with several bends. For the longer explanation, read our guide on how often a dryer vent should be cleaned.

HouseholdSuggested interval
1–2 people, a few loads a weekEvery 12 months
Family of 4+, or petsEvery 6–12 months
Roof vent, long run or many elbowsEvery 6 months, or as soon as drying slows down
Condo / multi-unit shared stackFollow the HOA schedule, which is often yearly with a written certificate

Why it matters: lint, heat and carbon monoxide

Fire risk. Lint catches fire easily. When the vent is restricted, heat builds up inside the dryer and the duct. The U.S. Fire Administration lists failure to clean as the leading cause of home clothes-dryer fires.
Gas dryers. A blocked vent can push combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, back into the house. Keep a working CO alarm near the laundry area.
Wear and energy. A dryer that has to run two cycles to dry one load wears out its heating element and thermal fuse sooner.

Signs your dryer vent is clogged

Clothes take longer than one cycle to dry.

The dryer or the clothes feel very hot at the end of a cycle.

The outside vent flap does not open while the dryer runs.

Lint or debris builds up around the outside vent hood.

The laundry room feels humid or smells musty or burnt.

The duct behind the dryer is crushed, kinked or disconnected.

Why Dryer Vent Fires Occur

In today’s homes, dryer vents tend to be vented longer distances, creating more places for lint to gather. Although dryers are equipped with lint traps, a significant amount of lint is not caught by the trap, and instead, builds up inside the dryer. In addition to creating a fire hazard, if your dryer vent duct is too long or has too many bends, it will cause your dryer to take much longer than necessary to dry loads, using more energy and electricity. Finally, inadequate clearance space between the dryer and the wall can cause the dryer to work inefficiently. The cumulative effect of reduced air-flow and the resulting lint buildup prevent the dryer from drying at a normal rate and risk causing a fire.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Check List

  1. Dryer duct must be at least 4″ diameter.
  2. Concealed ducts must be rigid metal duct.
  3. Duct joints shall be secured with metal tape.
  4. Pipe connections are installed to point in the direction of the airflow.
  5. Dryer vents shall be independent of all other systems and terminate outdoors.
  6. Outside hood should be equipped with a functioning back draft damper.
  7. Use only flexible metal connectors between the dryer and duct.
  8. Install rodent and bird screen protection.

What Causes Dryer Fires & How can I Prevent Dryer Fires

Restricted airflow, lint build-up and moisture cause overheating that prevents fast drying action. When this happens, the temperature limit safety switches cycle on and off continuously and will fail over a period of time.

Frequently asked questions

How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in NJ?

We charge a flat rate for a full dryer vent cleaning. You'll find the current price on our coupons and prices page. There's no extra charge based on where the dryer sits in the house or where the vent comes out.

How long does a dryer vent cleaning take?

About 45 minutes and up, depending on the length and layout of the vent run. Roof vents and long runs with many elbows take longer.

Can I clean my dryer vent myself?

You can clean the lint screen and the short hose behind the dryer yourself. Lint packed into elbows, long runs and roof vents needs professional brushes and an airflow test to confirm the line is clear.

What are the signs my dryer vent is clogged?

The most common signs are clothes that need more than one cycle, a dryer or laundry room that gets very hot, a burning smell, or an outside flap that barely opens while the dryer runs.

Do you clean roof dryer vents?

Yes. Roof, side-wall and back-wall vents are all included in the same flat rate.

Do you provide certificates for condos and HOAs?

Yes. On request, we provide a written certificate after the cleaning for your association's records.
