Who Cleans Dryer Vents? HVAC Company vs. Handyman vs. Specialist
Dryer vents are cleaned by dryer vent or duct cleaning specialists, by some HVAC and chimney companies, and by some handymen. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says to clean the vent pipe once a year or “have a dryer lint removal service do it for you.” Hire whoever cleans the full run to the outside hood and inspects it.

- What a pro uses: a rotary brush and a high-pressure blower, plus an inspection of the vent.
- How often: once a year, or sooner if drying takes longer than normal (NFPA).
- Gas dryers: NFPA says to have the gas line and connection inspected by a qualified professional.
- Ask before booking: flat rate or hourly, what’s included, insurance, and whether you get a written inspection.
What kind of company cleans dryer vents?
Three types of businesses commonly offer it. Dryer vent and duct cleaning specialists do it as a core service with dedicated tools. Some HVAC and chimney companies offer it as an add-on. Some handymen and appliance techs will clean the connector behind the dryer. The right choice depends on how much of the vent they actually clean.
| Dryer vent / duct specialist | HVAC or chimney company | Handyman / appliance tech | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical scope | Full run, dryer to outside hood | Varies; ask | Often the connector behind the dryer |
| Equipment | Rotary brush + high-pressure blower | Varies | Often a shop vac or hand brush |
| Long, roof or side-wall runs | Core work | Ask | Often not equipped |
| Written inspection / HOA certificate | Often available | Sometimes | Rarely |

Can an HVAC company clean my dryer vent?
Some can. Many HVAC contractors focus on furnaces, air conditioners and air ducts, and dryer vents may or may not be on their list. If you call one, ask whether they clean the full vent to the outside termination with a rotary brush, and whether they inspect the duct type and the outside flap.
Should I hire a handyman to clean a dryer vent?
A handyman can be fine for a short, straight, accessible vent, as long as they clean the whole run, not just the connector. Long runs through ceilings, condo and townhouse vents that exit on a side wall or roof, and vents with several elbows are better handled by someone with a rotary brush system who does this work every day.
What should I ask before I hire anyone?
Ask these six questions on the phone:
- Do you clean the whole vent, from the dryer to the outside hood?
- What equipment do you use? Ask them to name it, e.g. a rotary brush and a high-pressure blower.
- Is the price flat or hourly, and what can add to it? Rooftop access, tall ladders and bird nests are common extras.
- Do you inspect the vent and tell me what you found? Duct type, size, length, elbows and the outside flap.
- Do you offer a warranty or guarantee? Ask what it covers.
- Can you give me a written inspection or certificate? Many NJ HOAs ask for one.
At USA Air Management, the answers are: full run; rotary brush and high-pressure blower; flat rate per our coupons page; an inspection on every job; “Two months warranty and 100% result and satisfaction” with the HOA special; “We are Fully Licensed and Insured” (quoted from our coupons page); and a written inspection and certificate with our HOA, townhouse and condominium service.
Can I clean my dryer vent myself?
You can do the everyday part yourself. NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) say to clean the lint filter before or after every load, check that the venting behind the dryer isn’t damaged, crushed or restricted, and make sure the outdoor vent flap opens while the dryer runs. NFPA says the vent pipe itself should be cleaned once a year, by you or a dryer lint removal service.
Why does it matter who cleans it?
Because a partial cleaning leaves the fuel behind. NFPA says the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them, and USFA reports failure to clean (31%) was the leading factor in home clothes dryer fire ignitions from 2018 to 2020. Lint that stays in the far end of a long run is still lint.

Frequently asked questions
Who should I call to clean my dryer vent?
Call a company that cleans the entire vent, from the dryer to the outside hood, with a rotary brush and blower, and inspects the duct and outside flap. That is usually a dryer vent or duct cleaning specialist. Some HVAC and chimney companies also offer it. NFPA recommends cleaning the vent pipe once a year.
Do HVAC companies clean dryer vents?
Some do and some don’t. Many HVAC contractors focus on heating, cooling and air ducts. If you call one, ask whether they clean the full dryer vent to the outside termination, what equipment they use, and whether the price is flat or hourly. A dryer vent specialist does this work as a core service.
Is a handyman good enough for dryer vent cleaning?
For a short, straight, easy-to-reach vent, a careful handyman can do it if they clean the whole run and not just the connector behind the dryer. Long runs, vents through ceilings, and condo or townhouse vents that exit on a roof or side wall are better left to a specialist with a rotary brush system.
What questions should I ask a dryer vent cleaning company?
Ask whether they clean the whole vent to the outside hood, what equipment they use, whether the price is flat or hourly and what can add to it, whether they inspect the vent and report what they find, whether they offer a warranty, and whether they can provide a written inspection or HOA certificate.
Can I clean my own dryer vent?
You can handle the routine part: clean the lint filter before or after every load, check that the duct behind the dryer is not crushed, and make sure the outside flap opens. NFPA says the vent pipe should be cleaned once a year, either by you or by a dryer lint removal service, and sooner if drying slows down.
