What is air duct cleaning?

Duct cleaning means cleaning the parts of your forced-air heating and cooling system. If they aren't installed, maintained and run properly, they can collect dust, pollen and other debris.

What gets cleaned

  • Supply and return ducts
  • Registers, grills and diffusers
  • Heat exchangers
  • Heating and cooling coils
  • Drip pans
  • Fan motor and housing
  • Air handling unit housing

Where moisture is present, mold can grow and release spores into your living space. We loosen dirt in the ducts with specialized tools, then remove it with a high-powered vacuum system.

Why dust builds up in your ducts

Your system pulls air in through the return registers, and the dust comes with it. Standard throw-away fiberglass filters remove less than 7% of these particles, so much of the rest settles inside the ductwork.

Want to see for yourself? Take a look behind a return air grill. For many homeowners, one look is all the evidence they need.

What to expect

  • A residential cleaning takes just a few hours.
  • It's a clean, routine process.
  • A clean system runs more efficiently, which can lower heating and cooling costs.
  • A clean system has fewer breakdowns, which can cut maintenance costs.

What happens during a whole-system cleaning

  1. Inspect. We find the air handler and look at the returns and supply runs. Video inspection is available, so you can see inside the ducts before and after.
  2. Remove the registers. Supply and return covers are taken off and cleaned while the ducts behind them are worked on.
  3. Agitate every run. Rotary brushes are run through each supply vent and return to loosen built-up dust and debris, then the trunk lines and branch ducts are cleaned. Access panels are cut where needed and sealed afterwards.
  4. Furnace and main chamber. The blower compartment and main chamber are cleaned.
  5. Walkthrough. You see the results, along with the free dryer and chimney inspection included in the complete package.

How often should air ducts be cleaned?

The EPA and NADCA don't set a fixed schedule. Many homeowners clean every 3–5 years, and sooner after a renovation, after moving into a home that was smoky or had pets, after water or mold problems, or when someone in the house has allergies. Our article on the signs your air ducts need cleaning walks through each one.

Usually worth it: after remodeling or drywall work, rodent or insect activity, visible mold growth, or dust blowing out of the vents.
Usually not urgent: slight dust on the register covers only. Change your filter first, then check again.
Check the whole home: book together with your dryer vent cleaning and a chimney check. Not sure when the chimney was last looked at? See when to have a chimney inspected.

How to spot a bait-and-switch duct cleaning offer

A very low "whole house" price that turns into an upsell at the door is a common complaint in this industry. Before you book with anyone, ask how many vents and returns are included, whether trunk lines and the furnace chamber are cleaned, and whether there's a price cap per zone. Our complete package lists exactly what's included: unlimited vents and returns, all trunk lines, branch ducts and the furnace chamber, at a flat rate for a single-zone home up to 3 bedrooms.

When do you need air duct cleaning?

Air duct cleaning is an important part of home maintenance. Dirty ducts circulate allergens and dust through your home every time the system runs. Clean ducts help your system move air efficiently and keep the air in your home fresher.

Signs it's time

  • Mold growth inside the ducts or on the heating or cooling system (only a professional can confirm mold)
  • Insects or other small pests in the ducts
  • Ducts clogged with heavy dust or debris

Choosing a company

A poor cleaning can stir up dust or damage parts of the system, so hire a licensed company that follows NADCA standards. If anyone says they found mold, ask to see it and how to stop it from coming back.

Frequently asked questions

How much does air duct cleaning cost in NJ?

Our complete air duct cleaning is a flat rate for a single-zone home up to 3 bedrooms, and the current 60% Off offer is on our coupons and prices page. Larger homes and extra zones are quoted before we start.

How long does air duct cleaning take?

About an hour and a half and up, depending on the system. Multi-zone systems and larger homes take longer.

Is air duct cleaning worth it?

It's worth it after renovations, pests, mold or heavy dust, or when someone in the home has allergies. If the only issue is a little dust on the vent covers, change the filter first.

Will it make a mess in my house?

Our technicians work register by register: covers are removed and cleaned, rotary brushes loosen the dust inside each run, and the work areas are cleaned up before we leave. Let us know about anything fragile near your vents and we'll work around it.

Do you clean the furnace and coils too?

We clean the ducts, vents, returns and the furnace blower compartment and main chamber. We don't clean AC or furnace coils; that work is done by an HVAC contractor.

Do you offer commercial air duct cleaning?

Yes. See our commercial air duct cleaning page for offices, restaurants and multi-unit buildings.
