Garwood developed in the late 19th century as an industrial and residential community between Cranford and Westfield. The borough was named for Samuel Garwood, president of a railroad-affiliated land company. On the north side of the railroad, most of the streets are numbered, while on the south side of Garwood most of the streets are named after trees. Drivers and EMTs on the squad also answer calls for mutual aid when an ambulance is needed in other towns where one is not available.
Its growth was closely tied to the Jersey Central Railroad and local manufacturers including Hall Signal Company, Hercules Tube Works, and the Aeolian Company.
