Why chimney cleaning matters

Every fire you burn leaves deposits inside the chimney. Smoke cools as it rises, and it coats the flue with soot and creosote, a tar-like residue that builds up layer by layer. Chimney cleaning removes creosote deposits and other debris from your chimney and vents before they turn into one of two serious problems:

  1. Chimney fires. Creosote is highly combustible. During a chimney fire, temperatures inside the chimney often exceed 2,000 degrees. That can destroy the chimney and may set the house on fire.
  2. Flue blockages and carbon monoxide. Creosote, debris or animal nesting can block the flue. When that happens, dangerous fumes, including carbon monoxide, can be forced back into your home instead of venting outside. This isn’t only a wood-burning issue: chimneys also vent gas and oil heating systems, and a poorly maintained flue can push their exhaust back indoors.

Many accidents can be avoided with regular chimney cleaning. All chimneys should be cleaned annually for safe, optimal use.

Signs your chimney needs cleaning

  • It’s been more than a year since your last cleaning, or you don’t know when the chimney was last swept, which is common after buying a home.
  • Black, flaky or tar-like deposits inside the firebox, the damper area or the flue.
  • Smoke drifts into the room instead of drawing up the chimney, or fires are hard to start and keep going.
  • A strong smoky or campfire smell from the fireplace, especially on humid or rainy days.
  • Debris, twigs or nesting material falling into the firebox, or animal sounds in the chimney.
  • Dark staining around the fireplace opening.

If you suspect a blocked flue or smell exhaust fumes, stop using the fireplace or appliance until the chimney has been checked.

Our chimney cleaning process

We follow a careful, clean process so the soot stays in the chimney and out of your living room:

  1. Protect the room. Our technicians cover the area around the fireplace with plastic so no debris falls onto your floors or furniture.
  2. Clear the firebox. Any ash or leftover burned wood in the fireplace is brushed and swept into a trash bag, which is then sealed.
  3. Brush the chimney. A hard metal chimney brush on extendable rods is run up the chimney to break loose soot, creosote and debris from the flue walls.
  4. Vacuum and remove. The loosened debris is vacuumed and swept into another bag, sealed and taken out of your home.

The Chimney Cleaning flat rate includes both fireplace cleaning and chimney cleaning.

Chimney cleaning FAQs

How much does chimney cleaning cost in NJ?

Our chimney cleaning is a flat rate of $139.99 (regularly $179.99), and it includes both fireplace cleaning and chimney cleaning. You can also add chimney cleaning to a complete air duct cleaning for $69.99, or bundle it with dryer vent cleaning for $219.99 with a written certificate. There are no trip charges or hidden fees.

How often should a chimney be cleaned?

All chimneys should be cleaned once a year. Every fire leaves soot and creosote on the flue walls, and an annual cleaning removes that buildup before it can cause a chimney fire or a flue blockage. Clean sooner if you see heavy black deposits, smell smoke, or notice debris or nesting in the chimney.

What is creosote and why is it dangerous?

Creosote is a black, tar-like residue that forms as smoke cools and condenses inside the chimney. It builds up in layers and is highly combustible. If it ignites, temperatures inside the chimney often exceed 2,000 degrees, which can destroy the chimney and may set the house on fire. Annual chimney cleaning removes it.

Can a dirty chimney cause carbon monoxide problems?

Yes. If creosote, debris or an animal nest blocks the flue, dangerous fumes, including carbon monoxide, can be forced back into your home instead of venting outside. Chimneys that vent gas and oil heating systems need attention too. Regular chimney cleaning keeps the flue clear so exhaust can escape safely.

How do you keep my living room clean during a chimney sweep?

We cover the area around the fireplace with plastic before we start. Ash and leftover wood are swept into a sealed trash bag, the chimney is brushed with a metal brush on extendable rods, and the loosened debris is vacuumed, bagged, sealed and removed from your home. You shouldn’t be left with a mess.

Can I get chimney and dryer vent cleaning in the same visit?

Yes. Our Dryer Vent Cleaning & Chimney Cleaning coupon is a flat $219.99 (reg. $349.99) and includes dryer vent cleaning, chimney cleaning, fireplace cleaning and a written certificate. HOA and condo owners can choose dryer vent cleaning with a visual chimney inspection and an HOA written certificate for $109.99.

Do you provide chimney inspections for HOAs and condos?

Yes. HOA, condo and townhouse owners can add a visual chimney inspection for $20 to our HOA dryer vent cleaning special, or book Dryer Vent Cleaning & Chimney Inspection for $109.99, which includes an HOA written certificate. Call (908) 731-7090 to check availability for your association.

Are your chimney technicians certified?

Yes. Our technicians are certified by the Chimney Sweep and Dryer Exhaust Institute of America, and USA Air Management is fully licensed and insured. We’ve been cleaning New Jersey homes since 1996, and every job comes with our 100% results and satisfaction guarantee.
